Southern Junior High School (now Southern Middle School) opened its doors in August of 1987. The school's population consisted of 7th, 8th and 9th grade students from Burnside , Ferguson, Nancy, Oakhill, and Slate Branch communities The student body consisted of students that had formerly attended Pulaski County high school, The old Burnside and Nancy high schools and Ferguson/Southern Elementary. In the fall of 1993 Southern Junior High became Southern Middle School due to the completed construction of the new Southwestern High School (built on WTLO Road) that would now serve the students from Southern Middle School.

South started out as the Colonels and the school colors Royal Blue and Gold.

In 1997-98 The SBDM Council Officially changed the Colors and the Mascot of SMS from the Blue and Gold with the Colonel as the mascot to The Official Blue and Orange and Warrior as the mascot Southern Middle Became the Warriors as Our older Sibling Southwestern is |
