Getting To Know Us.
Southern Middle
School is located in the south central part of
Pulaski County, Kentucky, just
inside the city limits of Somerset.
We educate students that live in the central, southern
and western
end of the county. Our
student population comes from varied backgrounds with diverse cultural
experiences. Our Feeder school's includes Burnside,
Nancy, Oak
Hill, and Southern
Elementary schools. We are the feeder school for Southwestern
High School. Our school's student population will range
from 900 to as high as 1050 students. We have a faculty and staff of 100.
Our
aim at Southern Middle School is to provide each student with a positive
environment for academic achievement and character development leading to
the pursuit of individual excellence. The stakeholders at Southern believe that
all students can learn and should be afforded educational opportunities to
be successful in academics, social relationships, citizenship, employment,
and family interaction. Southern
Middle operates under the middle school philosophy,
working toward meeting the unique needs of the ever changing adolescent.
The
school is currently organized with grade level teaching teams as well as
academic departments. At this time we have two 8th grade teams, two
7th, and two 6th grade teams. For more information about the teams check

Southern
Middle provides an exploratory program that includes, ART, PE,
Science Experiments, Music and Band Classes. As well as an after school
chorus program.
As
for Technology; Southern
Middle Middle
has two large Technology lab consisting of 30
stations each, a Media Center Research lab consisting of 30 stations, a
smaller Media Center consisting of two stations devoted to AR and
two stations devoted to Card catalog. Each of our Language Arts teachers
and Math teachers at all three grade levels utilize mini labs in their
classroom s for special language art and math software
programs. All other classrooms have stations and several have mini
labs for science and social studies research opportunities. Software
extensively used at Southern Middle include:
Renaissance Learning programs,
STAR Math
and STAR Reading (software used to measure skill levels) Accelerated
Reader and Accelerated Math (specialized academic software programs).

(for math test construction)

(for scoring Scantron hardware)
One Call Now
is used for alerting parents to student absences as well as for the
teams and the school to call home with special team/school messages and
upcoming events.
Other
programs are available through Microsoft Office and the various textbook
companies.
Many
opportunities for the student to learn utilizing technology and the World
Wide Web are afforded as well. Programs like the SMG (Stock Market Game)
are used to teach students about investing and the stock market and our
WNN (Warrior News Network/STLP) teaches students about journalism and
Video production.
Character
education is an ever important concept included into our school's everyday
activities. Each morning on the WNN morning news broadcast the character
word of the month is given and segment called "Project Wisdom"
is presented to the student body. Each Year in connection with
character education SMS will take part in and usually excel in various
charitable activities. These activities include: A Christmas Time food
drive for the needy in our area called "The Feud For Food", Shoe
Box Ministries (sponsored by our school's FCA) shipping boxes full
of Christmas joy to under privileged children in other countries, Making
up money for the "Make A Wish Foundation" that
allows a child that One time fantasy vacation. The Angel Tree in
which hundreds of under privileged children in our area have been helped
through the generosity of their peers..
Other
offerings at SMS: Special programs offered through the school
consist of the Gifted and Talented Program.
Extended school services include peer tutoring, after school
tutoring, and 4 weeks of academic academies to enhance student
achievement. SMS has access to an on campus Youth Services Center that
provides various services to our students and their parents.
The
faculty constantly explores new ideas to improve all aspects of the school
environment while maintaining our ultimate focus- STUDENT.
